Avid barre class lovers know that grip socks are a frequent requirement of the method. This requirement started back at the original barre studio, The Lotte Berk Method.  Socks (okay just regular socks not grip socks) were required. Lydia Bach (the creator and founder of all things barre in this country) taught that covering the feet would keep the heat regulated in the body.  The Lotte Berk Method classes were performed on a carpeted surface, making grip socks unnecessary. However, ballet barres unless treated, are porous. Thus, wearing socks saved all of our feet from getting fungus that would be transferred to the floor, barre, mats and bands, while making it easier...

CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE So to the friends and clients I don't see regularly, and to some that I do. Almost all of my names are in flux at the moment. I have changed my name back to my maiden name Guerin. After being a Hamm for over 12 years I have no idea how to sign my name, or answer the phone. However I do believe the change is ALL positive. The studio name is also changing. Pure Movement Portland has changed to BarSculpt. BarSculpt is not just a kick ass class that I developed.. it is now also the place you...

"When I first got engaged my first thought was, 'Holy crap we're getting married!' My second thought was 'Holy crap I need to get in shape!' And so the search was on to find a routine that was challenging, effective and most importantly could hold my attention for the eight months leading up to our wedding. By halfway through my first BarSculpt class, my arms and legs shaking like I've never experienced, I was hooked. For 55 minutes four times a week I was in the zone; 'down an inch, up an inch, down an inch, up an inch' -...

Going through this years notes I have come across some class feedback for my teachers. I thought I would share those concerning the warm up! * Ankle Under Knee when Bending up for Marching Leg Lifts * Always bend your knees to pick up your weights * Hips width apart… make sure you get what you ask for * if you are counting every repetition you are missing something * Shoulder over hips for FrontBody * arms during front body should stay in front.. this includes elbows. * Resisting the lowering of the weights- feel as though you are moving through mud * Ribs stay connected to hips...

“Personally I have always struggled with stillness. As attracted as I have been to personal growth, exploration (both mind and body) and physical challenges on my mat, it was not until I first took a Lotte Berk Method Class that I understood that some of us find contentment (even quiet) not while silent, still or reflective but while moving, working hard and not being given a rest. I look at it as my white noise to happiness!” ~ Leslie...

Movement and fitness have always been an important part of Meredith's life.  She first discovered the benefits of Pilates when it was offered in conjunction with her Ballet and Modern training as a young dancer.  Meredith received her B.A. in dance teaching and performance from Mercyhurst University, and M.F.A. in dance performance and choreography from Smith College, all the while still training in Pilates.  As her career performing and teaching continued to build, Meredith discovered that Pilates could change the look and feel of her body unlike anything else.  She recognized that this method is a continual practice, one that connects both the mind and body. She wanted to share it...

Lacey is a dedicated and engaged BarSculpt and Pilates instructor. She has been working for Pure Movement since 2010, after a year spent as a frequent client. Her journey to becoming an instructor was not an obvious one. While she has always felt at ease in front of a crowd and thrived off of the feeling of an invigorating workout, she did not come by teaching classes until the Pure Movement community and her mentor/teacher (Leslie J Guerin) instilled in her the confidence to grow from student to teacher.  As a child, Lacey was a natural athlete and participated in team sports and some...
